During the Doklam standoff, numerous analysts speculated on the apparent lack of US support for India during the impasse. In this article, I critique all the different theories that explain the US’ position, including the explanation given by American diplomatic sources. I conclude that the various arguments tap into the faulty narrative of enhanced US-India strategic ties. The episode shows that the US-India relationship is not on par with the American administration’s ties with other strategic partners like Japan and that economic interests in China still trump the importance of India in US foreign policy.
